Light and quick, the 109 had a Cannon protruding through the spinner and two 20mm machine guns timed to fire in between the propellers of the variable pitch prop. With the combination of a turbo charged, water cooled engine and the variable pitch propeller it became more feasable to escort bombers at high altitude for extended periods of time.
